Crankbaits

Crankbaits refers to a huge array of lures and lure designs. Crankbaits are typically a lipped hard lure that has the shape of a baitfish and dives under the surface during the retrieve. A crankbait will usually have at least two sets of treble hooks, one in the front and one at the back.

There are deep diving crankbaits, crankbaits for shallow waters, ultralight ones and many more designs. Some crankbaits are designed for bass and some are better than others for trolling. Brands and lure makers that manufacture crankbaits are bandit, poes, bagley, norman, bomber, manns etc. You can also find custom made crankbaits.

There are also so-called lipless crankbaits that are thin, minnow-like lures that sink. Lipless crankbaits are usually better in areas with weeds and rocks.

More about crankbait lures

The diving depth of the crankbait lure can be roughly determined by the size of the lip and the bigger and longer the lip is, the deeper the lure will dive.

Remember that the line size that you use is the biggest controlling factor on how deep your crankbait will run. Lighter lines will of course cause the crankbait to run to its maximum depth.

Some or most (?) crankbaits come with bronze hooks and split rings and itīs a good thing to change them to better quality ones.

Crankbaits are quite simple to fish, but there are a few tricks you can learn to use crankbaits more effectively.
