Lure fishing basics
Lure fishing has become more popular among anglers after predator fish such as Pike, Perch and Zander. Lures can be wobblers & plugs, spinners, spoons, crankbaits or jigs.
What you need and what to do
- A rod between 7-9 feet long. Shimano or Abu make some excellent lure fishing rods.
- Attach the lure by a snap swivel at the end of the wire trace.
How fast you retrieve the lure often depends on the depth of the water and the type of lure. As soon as you start clipping the bottom, then bring your spinner back faster.
Lure Fishing Tactics
January - March
Water temperature will be low and the fish slow during these
months and you should move the lure slow and fish close to
the bottom. Ideally lures that can pause during the retrieve
without snagging are best (jigs rigged with soft plastic shads
or grubs, weed less spoons and spinnerbaits).
April - June
Typical for April - June is warmer water and the pike´s
increased feeding activity. The pike will stay in the shallow
water until it gets too hot for comfort and they depart into
deeper and cooler water.
July - September
Big pike can mostly be found in deep water where they rest
for long periods, feeding spells are often short around first
and last light. Evening/night fishing in august with surface
lures can be successful.
October - December
Fish deeper and slower. In December most action will come
with "bottom lures" at slow speed. Some people recommend
noisy baits and highly visible fluorescent coloured lures.
